Welcome Home, Jose

While these are topsy-turvy times for events, a small group of well-masked friends and family members gathered outside of Jose’s new Habitat home last week. It’s was an outdoor home dedication… small in size, but big in heart.

Jose’s renovated home is on South Christian Street in Lancaster’s southeast neighborhood and is one of fourth properties that Habitat has transformed into affordable, permanent homes along the 300 block.

Home dedications are typically large, festive events that include a tour of the home’s interior, a number of speakers and refreshments. The occasion is  meant to celebrate the homebuyer’s achievement of homeownership and include such special moments as the official “passing of the keys” from Habitat to the homeowner.

While Jose’s celebration was smaller, it was heart-felt. Many family members attended, along with Habitat volunteers and staff. The front porch displayed joyful banners and a big red bow adorned the home’s front door.

While Jose only just moved in (and will be joined by his wife, who is currently in the Dominican Republic and delayed due to COVID-19 restorations on entering the country), a recent visit to his home revealed he already has pictures on the wall and magnets on his fridge. He has made his house a home.

When the global pandemic recedes, we will celebrate Jose’s accomplishment with a full-on celebration. In the meantime, we send many happy, congratulatory sentiments his way.
