Habitat loves to build homes of all sizes … including homes for our very small, feathered friends.
As part of Habitat’s partnership with the SoWe neighborhood initiative in Lancaster, and with support from the Fulton Mortgage Company, we have built 108 birdhouses to give away to residents of the Southwest community. Our construction team and amazing volunteers have been busy on the front lawn of our Fairview office sawing, hammering, and sanding these special little homes. Franklin & Marshall biology professor Dan Ardia advised our team about the type of home to construct for house wrens and Carolina chickadees, birds that Southwest residents can find in their own backyards.
The giveaway began on Tuesday, May 29th and will continue as long as supplies last. SoWe residents are welcome to stop by our office at 443 Fairview Avenue Mon-Fri from 10 AM to 3 PM for a birdhouse, after filling out a pickup form (which can be found here). Birdhouses will also be available at Habitat’s table at the SoWe Block Party on Saturday, June 23rd at Culliton Park from 2:00 to 7:00 PM.
To add a little more fun and color to the birdhouses that will now dot the SoWe neighborhood, we are also holding a decorating contest. If you decorate your Habitat birdhouse, you will have the opportunity to win a handcrafted raised garden bed for your backyard. The raised bed features an innovative watering technique that’s referred to as SIP, self-watering, sub-irrigated planter system, meaning the water is funneled directly underneath the plants’ roots.
To enter the contest, please forward a picture of your birdhouse to email@example.com by September 15h. Or, better yet, bring your (unoccupied) birdhouse to our office for display at our Rock the Block event in SoWe on October 13th (more information forthcoming). A winner will be drawn and announced at this neighborhood event.
Many thanks to the Habitat volunteers who worked over the course of two weeks to build the birdhouses and to artist Kay O’Mahony, who created the Habitat-themed birdhouse pictured with this article. Funding support was generously provided by Fulton Mortgage Company.
