File cabinets are often in abundance at ReStore. As we move away from paper and save our documents online, the cabinets are becoming less of a staple and more of a dinosaur.
But we’ll always have a need to store things. So let’s turn another person’s donation to ReStore into your functional treasure. In this example, we’ve converted a file cabinet into a bedside table. It’s perfect for a child or adolescent’s room, where storage is needed and the option to play with fun colors will hide the drab of the gray metal cabinet.
The two drawer cabinet, plus a wood top, is actually the perfect height for a bedside table. In this case, leftover butcher block was used, which is thick enough to make the table the right height for a bed.
This is a super simply project. Start by spray painting the cabinet. (Stay tuned for an upcoming video on how to properly spray paint!) Don’t rush this part. It may take even a few days to add thin coat upon thin coat, but you’ll avoid the hassle of sanding off drippy marks that come with too much spray paint at one time.
Next, find a wood piece thick enough to match the height of your bed. Sometimes you’ll even find scraps for free at your local hardware store or lumber yard (and if you ask, they might just cut it to size for you).
You’ll want your wood piece to extend beyond the surface area of the file cabinet’s top. So when you cut it, you’ll want to factor in about a ½ inch extra on each side.
The butcher block is so heavy, that I wasn’t too concerned about it falling off the cabinet or tipping. However, it does shift. I simply took doublesided tape and ran it along the top of the cabinet. It created a sticky, gummy layer that prevents the wood top from shifting.
If your wood piece is very thin, you’ll want to consider using some sort of heavy duty glue or adhering agent to keep it from slipping off your cabinet.
In the end, this tween want to jazz it up with vinyl stickers. You can also stencil it.
It’s a super simple project that offers a big return for a relatively low investment of time and money.
