When you meet Misty, you can be sure of one thing … the smile you get from her will make your day. She can be painting brick or smoothing cement on a build site, and she will happily greet you and share her excitement for her future as a Habitat homeowner. (In fact, she is currently taking snapshots of the Habitat friends and supporters she’s working alongside for a photo album that will capture her journey towards homeownership.)
Misty is a single mother of two children, Armani, 9, and Sterling, 15. For four years, she has been steadily employed as a manager at a local restaurant. Despite working hard, her monthly rent of $1,000 has made her dream of becoming a homeowner all but impossible to achieve.
To save money towards the purchase of her own home, she and her daughter moved in with a friend. Armani sleeps in the bed; Misty on the floor. Her son currently lives with his father, and she looks forward to being reunited with him when she becomes a homeowner.
Anxious to get started, Misty jumped right in to earning her sweat equity hours as part of the Habitat homeownership program. You can find her working at the South Christian Street renovation site, or perhaps taking a homeownership class, which will teach her how to manage her future home.
We share Misty’s enthusiasm for her new beginning … and we’ll continue to appreciate her smile.
